Christchurch Earthquake

Welcome to our blog site where students at the Royal Children's Hospital can follow our project. Congratulations to everyone who has played a part in making the 2011 Trans Tasman Project so successful. Chisnallwood Intermediate School has decided to purchase a pizza oven for the school camp which is a terrific idea. The total amount raised in New Zealand Dollars was $2780.
We hope that students will enjoy making and eating pizza for many years to come :)

On behalf of the project team, thanks again and all the best for 2012!

Voting closes

Well we are nearly there. Thanks to everyone's tremendous efforts, we have raised $2006. A special mention to Bialik College who raised $501 for our project in less than 2 weeks. This humble compassion and support, along with the Station Hotel's wonderful $550 has seen us double our project target of $1000! And of course not to forget the wonderful donations from ties n cuffs and recognition ID. Without this wonderful generosity we certainly would not have been able to raise so much.

Scholastic books are also jumping on board and donating some books to Chisnallwood Intermediate School which is fantastic.

Voting has closed and the preferred choices have been narrowed down. These are:

19 votes- school camp repairs

14 votes- sports equipment & scholarship fund

9 votes- emergency kit supplies

Chisnallwood Intermediate school community will now have the final say and we will present the money towards the end of the week.

Thanks to each and every person who has contributed to this project and in turn made it so successful. You all should be exceptionally proud of yourselves!

VOTING IS NOW OPEN

Hi guys,

Please take the time to vote for your preferred choice for what the fundraised money should go towards. Remember that there is approx 750 11, 12  & 13 year olds.

Thank you to the students from Bialik College who suggested some fantastic ideas. They have also taken some of the remaining merchandise back to school  with them to sell, which is a tremendous help. Such willingness to help both local and global communities is a really wonderful  thing. Thank you :)
Voting closes next Friday the 18th of November, which will mark the conclusion of this wonderful project.

Thanks everyone :)

Chisnallwood students put some ideas forward. Bialik College lend a hand.

After returning back to school after holidays, students at Chisnallwood Intermediate have suggested a few ideas that we could put the money towards.  Here are a few ideas...

 - Repairs to Camp Taylor (school camp in Takamatua)

 - Sport equipment

- Backfield activities

 - books (Scholastic are already donating books)

I have asked the students to have a think about whether they would prefer an activity for themselves. If they prefer to have the money go towards school facilities and resources then that is perfectly okay too.

Keep an eye out towards the end of the week for a poll of the activities.  Please vote for your favourite idea.

While we are making the final decision, Bialik has graciously offered to sell some of our remaining merchandise. This is a lovely offer and will definitely help our wonderful cause.  Thanks guys - we really appreciate it!

The Station Hotel

A big thank you to the staff at the Station Hotel who have done a wonderful job supporting our project over the past 5 weeks. Today we received the wonderful sum of $550 to go towards out project. This is amazing and has taken our sum to approximately $1500!!   Thanks so much! - we really appreciate :)

Almost there

Last weekend saw the final weekend of the Rugby World Cup, which was also the final week of the Station Hotel selling our project merchandise. The BBQ and merchandise from the week before came in at over $280 which was fantastic. That brings the total to over $500 raised by The Station and we still have to include any money raised from the finals weekend. We are guessing that we will reach approx $1500+ which is absolutely amazing.

We have not been in contact with the students at Chisnallwood Intermediate for about a month, although they have just returned from school holidays this week. They are yet to advise us what they would like the money to go towards, so if we haven't heard from them by mid next week, we will be asking students here to make the decision.

Keep a look out over the next few weeks for the completion of the project as well as your opportunity to have your say about the wellbeing activity.

A big big thank you - we reached our target!!

Just wanted to say a very,  very  BIG thank you to everyone who has jumped on board and helped make our Trans Tasman project possible.  In particular to Giuseppe for contributing immensely and really managing the project for majority of the duration. To Allesha  for putting in so many of the hard yards with her students on 3east.  The project really wouldn’t have been so successful without  the work of you both.

Thank you so much to Andrew from Ties ‘n’ cuffs (donation of the pins), David and his staff at the Station Hotel in Prahran (selling our merchandise & the bbq)  and Martin from Recognition ID (donation of the pens). Your generosity is incredibly humbling and has allowed us to raise this wonderful amount.

To everyone else for selling, managing, eating, wearing, donating  and spreading the word – Fantastic and thank you!

AND FOR THE BIG NEWS…

Although we haven’t quite finished, we are pleased to inform you that we have actually surpassed our $1000 target!!!   We have approx $1300 and we still have a further  2 weeks of fundraising left. This is not including the fantastic Scholastic donation of books (thank you Glenda).

In the next 3-4 weeks the wellbeing activity for the students at Chisnallwood Intermediate School will be decided.  We will inform you  of the outcome and final amount raised.

Thank you again, you surely have contributed to brightening the day of these brave and resilient kids.

Greg Somerville BBQ a big success

On Sunday the 16th , before the Australia vs New Zealand Rugby World Cup semi final, Allesha and I went down to the Station Hotel in Prahran to support the BBQ that was being hosted by former All Black and Melbourne Rebels player Greg Somerville. The hotel manager Dave had organised the guest appearance, purchased the food and had very kindly decided that all proceeds would go to our Trans Tasman project. (THANK-YOU DAVE!!)  We found Greg to be a very warm  and personable person who was genuinely very interested in  our project.  From Christchurch, he has a very good understanding of the difficult times the community has and continues to go through and thought our project was great. Not only did he donate his time, he also made a donation which was fabulous:)

While Greg chatted to the patrons, Allesha and I took the opportunity to sell the merchandise throughout the venue. I must say the customers were exceptionally supportive and bought plenty of our merchandise.

We left before the game but I think we raised an additonal $200 which is fantastic.

A big thank you to the Station Hotel and all the staff for supporting us so tremendously. As some of you would know, the New Zealand All Blacks were victorious over the Wallabies and play in this Sunday's final.  This will be the last week the merchandise is on sale so  we will then see how much we have raised:)

Thanks again everyone,  top job!

Project Wrapping up

The last 3 weeks we have been continuing to sell our products.  We have almost reached out project funds goal which is fantastic!!  Thank you so much everyone who has been supporting our project, especially those who have helped devour over 2000 chocolates :)

We will be stepping up the selling process over the next 3-4 weeks to try and sell the remaining wristbands and pins.  And of course a big thanks to Recognition ID  who have donated a large quantity of  these fantastic pens
Pens avaiable for a small donation

We are still waiting to hear from students at Chinallwood Intermediate  in regards to what they would like the money to go towards. We have asked them for their suggestions by October 17th whereby we will post  a poll on the blog for RCH students to vote for their preferred wellbeng activity.
The project will be wrapped up by the end of October and the money will be presented to the school or activity organisation early November.

Thanks again everyone and we look forward to the end result :)

A big thank you to Dave and The Station Hotel

Last Monday  RCH teachers met with Dave, the manager from The Station Hotel. We had approached him the week before to see if he would be interested in supporting out project by selling our merchandise during the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
We took wristbands, pins ans chocolates to the meeting and Dave was  extremely kind and jumped aboard to support us.
Dave was very impressed with all the work from the students and thinks the public will get behind the project as it is such a worthy cause.
Thank you to all the hard work of students so far and thanks to the work experience girls who quickly whipped up some promotional posters.
Stay tuned as Dave is gong to email is weekly an let us know how our merchandise is selling.   A very big thank you again Dave!  Your generosity and kindness is very much appreciated and will make a huge difference to the students at Chisnallwood Intermediate.

Recognition ID - recognising a wonderful & worthwhile project

Allesha presented at a conference a few weeks ago and was approached by a teacher whose husband was a director of the company Recognition ID. They were so moved by our project that they offered to support the project by donating merchandise. Allesha liaised with Mark on the adolescent ward and has arranged for some pens to be printed. Thanks so much Recognition ID for supporting our project. Thanks to Allesha for the ace networking and thanks to Mark for organising suitable products. Nice job everyone!

AGM & August round up

The Education Institute held their Annual General Meeting last Tuesday. Allesha did a fantastic job presenting our project and thank you to all the wonderful people who supported our fundraising appeal. There was lots of great feedback about the contributions of the students so thank you!

The last lot of chocolates will arrive tomorrow. Can you be believe we have sold over 1450 chocolates! Amazing!!! The Pins are selling well and the wristbands.. Well they have been a little slower. Hopefully we can sell some of these over the next month.

We sent wristbands to all of room 7 last week and they loved them. A few of the teachers also received the pins and they thought the logo was very cute.

the students have written another lot of letters to suggest ideas about what the money should go towards. Please keep your ideas coming.

We are hoping to wrap up the project around October so looking forward to seeing what wonderful wellbeing activity we will provide for students at Chisnallwood Intermediate.

Have a great week and keep up the good work promoting our project and our products!

What will we do with the money??

As our fundraising is in full swing we thought it was time to ask for suggestions as to what we should put the money towards.   We are almost 1/2 way to our target of $1000 and we hope to reach it  in the next few months.  We will be asking students in Room 7 at Chisnallwood Intermediate to tell us what they would like, however it would be great if we could offer some suggestions. It is our hope that the money goes towards improving the wellbeing of these students who have been through so much this  year.
Things to remember are:
  • Students are between 11-13 years of age
  • There are approx 750 students
  • Grass areas and fields may be closed due to the water damage  & liqufaction
Post your ideas and we will run a poll to vote in the next few weeks.

thanks

Fundraising quizzes a success

Last week as a result of the wonderful planning and organising  by students, Skates and the Macadamia crew, we were able to hold 2 fundraising quizzes. The quizzes were aired live on both days and students across all the wards were able to participate for a small donation.
On Tuesday we had one for the younger kids. This was very sucessful and  students were super quick to call in with their answers and claim their prizes! Thanks heaps to Skates, Paige and Giuseppe who did such  a wonderful job hosting the quiz.
On the Wednesday we had one for adolescent kids.  Among the prizes were an ipod shuffle, perfume & cologne, itunes cards and many more. This was a little harder to muster up kids to particpate but  we got there in the end and it was successful. Big thanks to Giuseppe and Jake who also did a fabulous job hosting:)

July 28th Weekly update

Time sure fly’s when you are busy fundraising!!  We updated our money thermometer yesterday and realised that we hadn’t posted a blog for over 2 weeks!! Sorry about that, I guess we must have been too busy selling chocolates but can you believe in just 2 weeks we have raised over $200?!!!  Awesome job everyone!!

G is currently flat out working with other students on 3 East organising 2 quizzes to be held live on the in house hospital show called Macadamia. These will be held as another fundraising activity and will be aired next Tuesday and Wednesday, so he has given me a list of things to blog about :) Here goes....

Letters from Christchurch
We hope you are enjoying reading the little snippets of letters from Chisnallwood Intermediate School. The letters have attracted enormous interest from students, families and medical staff.  The Christchurch community sure have, and continue to, experience challenging times and we look so forward to the end of the project where we hope we can do something special and put some smiles of students faces.  If you would like to read some of the letters in full and you are in the hospital, visit the 3 East learning space or the 8th Floor where there are letters displayed on the walls.

Stories about the project

A few organisations outside the hospital have been interested in writing stories about our project and use of ipads.  This is fantastic exposure of the terrific work students are doing ans we lok forward to reading the published pieces.

Annual General Meeting

The Trans Tasman project will also feature at our Annual General Meeting which is very exciting!     Students will be given the opportunity to help plan aspects of the display which is fabulous.

mmmm....Chocolates

720 chocolate freddo frogs arrived just over 2 weeks ago and students, families and staff have been fantastic in supporting us. G has been running a tight ship on the 8th floor, ensuring no sneaky IOU’s occur. ‘No coin no chocolate’ is proving to be a very good policy!
We have sold over 600 chocolates and are on our last 2 boxes now.  Students have requested to order another 10 boxes with a few different flavours.

Help fill the Cracks wristbands

The wristbands arrived on Monday and they look amazing.  Check them out on the blog.  Wristbands are $2.00 each and can be purchased on the 3rd and 8th floor.  If you are on another ward and would like one please let your teacher know.

Help fill the cracks Pins

The metal pins with the fantastic project logo have not yet arrived.  They shouldn’t be too long now though  - We need to remember that the wonderful people from Ties  & Cuffs are donating the pins so it might take a little bit longer as we are not paying customers.

This is our fantastic design for the pins >

Hot off the press: - Live Macadamia Quizzes

Amazing news!!!   We met with Skates the Macadamia producer and they have welcomed a fundraising quiz to be help live!

Students and staff will come around next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday with answer sheets and we will be asking in return for a donation towards out project appeal. For the older kids there will be an amazing prize of a ipod shuffle so we will asking for a gold coin donation for the answer sheet :)

The Prep – year 3 quiz will be on Tuesday at 2pm when the usual matchup is being played.   There will be 3 rounds, with the first person to call with all the correct answers after each round to win a prize.  There will also be lucky number spot prizes so you could be a winner just by playing!
The Grade 4+  quiz will be help on the couch Wednesday at 2pm.  There will be 4 rounds.  Answer sheets will be collected after the final round and taken back to the studio for marking.  The top 10 people with the most correct answers will go in the draw for the ipod shuffle.   There will also be runners up prizes and lucky number spot prizes for this quiz.   Prizes so far include movie tickets, zoo tickets, itunes cards, smiggle  products and much, much more.  It’s going to  be a great...

Happy quiz planning everyone and as always, thanks heaps for all your hard work.

Weekly round up - July 8th, 2011

Hi everyone,
It sure has been a week of action this week! G has started his distant education courses on top of his already busy timetable so I am going to write the weekly update this week :)

The project is really gathering momentum and there is alot of interest across the hospital and wider community about what we are doing.

Our first few fundraising activities are about to kick into gear. The chocolates arrive next Monday and we have been given approval on the wards to sell them which is great.

500 red & black wristbands (with help fill the cracked embossed on them) have been ordered and paid for. Production will take 2-3 weeks so it won't be long before they arrive.

The wonderful creative work from students and the teacher on 3east have resulted in a wonderful logo for our project. Check out our blog a little later once we have uploaded it. Nice work guys - I have sent the logo to the wonderful people at tiesncuffs who have donated pins for adults and staff to purchase. Production of these is starting as we speak which is great news.

A young lady on 3 east has also been busy working on a stencil to print on some bags. Great idea and we look forward to seeing the end product.

So as you can see everything is shaping up well.

Next week we need the following tasks to be started:

- A holding container or box to be made to hold the wristbands and pins that will be for sale. there must be somewhere for the money to go

- Postcard (similar to the chocolate sign) that shows the items for sale and the price. On the back of the postcard we will have a blurb about what the project is about.

- A $ meter for the cafeteria back wall to display the money we are raise. I think some 3east students may have already started it.

- Find out how to add a $ meter on our blog.

- Respond to letters from Room 7 students

In the next few weeks we will also start looking at our live quiz on the hospital Macademia show.

Fantastic news!!!!

The lovely people at ties 'n' cuffs custom made in NSW has very generously offered to donate 250 pins custom made with our logo. How amazing is that!!! Please feel free to leave a comment thanking them for their generosity.

Weekly round up

The letters arrived from Christchurch this week. Pls post your comments under the thanks room 7 Post.

3 east kids are making a logo for screen printing on bags. The logo looks great and will be used as our project logo. Students are also gaining quotes for chocolates that we will sell on the wards.

Wristbands will be orded by the end of the week and as soon as the logo is ready we will order some pins and pens for the adults.

The quiz will be held off for a couple of weeks until the chocolates and wristbands are up and running.

Jobs for this week are.

* Boxes for selling products to be designed and completed/ promotion flyer (why? Cost)
* permission to sell products from the ward NUMS
* 3 east to order chocolates
* auxiliaries to be contacted re calico bags
* logo to be complete
* we will need to talk to skates from macadamia re the live quiz

Bye For now and thanks to all

Thanks to room 7 at chisnallwood intermediate school

Big thanks to all who wrote to us. We all enjoyed reading your letters though they all made us sad about what you went through. We are happy that all of you are safe. We hope that the last big aftershock did not cause too much more damage and that you and your family are safe.

Weekly update June 17

Hi everyone.

Our thoughts are with the people in Christchurch who suffered through a 6.3 aftershock on Monday. There were also 90 aftershocks in a 24 Hour period.

It has been a slow week with not much happening on the Blog due to exams for alot of kids. Also we had the public holiaday.

With the wristbands there is only one day left to vote and so far the wrist band Red/Black-Help Fill The Cracks is the most popular.

Still wating for permission for the wristbands but hopefully we will be able to place the order next week.

We need to get cracking on the chockolate boxes and posters please.

There are alot of jobs posted on the Blog if you are looking to help.

bye for now......

Christchurch city rocked again - Monday June 13th, 2011

Christchurch community have again been hit by strong aftershocks, one registering 6.0 on the richter scale. Further damage has occurred, liquefaction (water seeping up and mixing with the soil) is causing havoc and people have been injured. As one member of the community summed it up, the situation is exhausting. Post a warm thought here for the Christchurch community who are one again fearing for their safety and face another night without power and water.

One more thing.... the newsletter

One more thing :)  We would  like to send a small article or illustration to Chisnallwood Intermediate  to ask if they could please include this in the school newsletter. We would love to have students and families at home jump on the blog and see what our project is about.
Only needs to be brief - Introducing who we are, what our project is about, our blog address  and what activities we are holding to raise money. Please see a ward teacher if you need more details.

Mmmmmmm. CHOCOLATE!!!!!!

Another fundraising idea that has been suggested is selling chocolates on the wards. We would need to get approval by the Nurse Unit Manager on the wards first, but for now we can find some quotes.
Please research the best possible way to do this and remember the profit margin needs  to be enough to make the fundraising worthwhile. thanks

URGENT...What about the parents & staff?

Hey Guys,

We still need some ideas and quotes for some items we can sell parents and staff. We have some pretty hip adults but I'm not sure wristbands are everyone's cup of tea. And then there is infection control which probably will prevent wristbands being worn by staff.   We need small additional promotional items that can be sold. Things like little pins and small badges? Pens ? usb sticks?  Can you help?  Kind of urgent as we would ideally sell these at the same time as the wristbands. :)

Help! Tasks to do please.. :)

Hi everyone,

Thanks a million for all your help so far but there is still plenty to do!

For the next few weeks these are the tasks that we need to do...

  • Create 6 boxes / trays that can hold the wristbands and a slot area for the money. ( students will need to be able to carry when we visit other wards)

  • Create a poster and flyer (on the ipad please) promoting the sale for the wristbands. please include...
    • price $2 each
    • Cause - Helping the wellbeing of  students in Christchurch, New Zealand  recover from the Earthquake

  • Loved the idea of a live quiz on Macademia. Can a few people please write a short brief outlining how it could work so we can take it to the show producers. Think about the age you are targeting - maybe have several segments to target a few age brackets. How are you going to fund raise? G-Dawg had a great idea about charging  a gold coin donation for a quiz answer sheet. Also keep in mind we will need prizes so how are we going to source these?  - perhaps writing/ringing to few local companies?

  • See separate posts regarding chocolates and pens/ pins.

Chisnallwood Intermediate School, Christchurch, New Zealand

The school we are fundraising for in Christchurch is an Intermediate school that has an enrolment of approx 750 (not including Internationals) year 7 & 8 students. The students we are communicating with are 11-12 years old and are in year 7. The school  was fortunate enough to be able to open  about 1 month after the earthquake, however many of the pupils have been badly affected. Many feeder schools have been significantly damaged.

Weekly update (June 9th)

Well it's Friday again and another week had flown by! G-Dawg is  flatchat today with appointments so I (8th floor teacher) have offered to do this post.  We are almost ready to place an order for our first fundraising idea - wristbands. With 8 days to go before voting closes, it looks like the favoured wristband is red and black with  'help fill the cracks' embossed or printed. 500 wristbands are slightly in front with  1000 being the second most preferred quantity. Don't forget we could contact local schools in the area to jump aboard and we do have 4 or so months to sell them .  If you haven't voted yet, make sure you do :)

We are still waiting for the letters from the students at Chisnallwood Intermediate. Remember we need to be patient given the current situation in Christchurch and  acknowledge the letters may take a little longer in the post.

There has been more great  fundraising ideas suggested and we will be looking at exploring these next week. See the 'Help - more tasks to do please' post to see how you can help.

Again, thanks very much for all your help and fabulous ideas. Keep them coming  :)

Weekly update (3/6/2011)

It's been a very busy week with the project but it is coming along nicely. We have created the posters, short listed designs for the wristbands and we are waiting for the letters from Chisnallwood Intermediate School in Christchurch to arrive. In the next two weeks we would like to meet with the RCH Foundation to gain approval and finalise our wristbands order. We will also be looking at how we are going to sell them. We will also be looking for more new ideas for fundraising.

thanks for your work so far-keep up the good work.

TIME TO DECIDE ON WRISTBAND DESIGN

Thanks to all who have participated in our blog. We are almost there. All we need now is for you to vote on our new poll and tell us what you think. What will be the colours/slogan that will fundraise money to send to Christchurch ?

While you are there, have a think what nurses, doctors and parents would like to buy besides the wristbands.
e.g. pens

THE RESULTS ARE IN. (READ THIS)

The rubber wristbands came out on top with flying colours to be the first fundraising  item  for the Christchurch earthquake.

While we are waiting for approval, tell us some colours & slogans for the bands.

For example:
*red & black - for the Christchurch colours
*green & yellow/black & white - for the New Zealand & Australia coming together.
*blue & yellow - blue for the sea or sky & yellow for the sun or sand.

slogans could be:
*what's cracklacking
*hand in hand
*chch & rch unite
*c'mon! you can do it
